In Alaska, students will first compete at the State level and myself and other SAR Compatriots will select the winner. That essay will then be entered into the National competition where the winning essay will earn $5000, a medal, and a trip to a recognition ceremony. 2nd and 3rd place also earn cash awards.

State-level awards include $500 for 1st place, $250 for 2nd place, and $100 for 3rd place with recognition certificates as well as a medal for the first place winner.

Just last year, Lillian Yang from West Anchorage High School was our State winner and also finished 1st Nationally! $6000 in scholarship money and was flown to the east coast to be recognized! We have had very few students apply the past several years, so your chances of winning a cash prize are very good!
