Patriotism may be our highest civic value, but what does it mean? Patriotism can be defined as “love of, and devotion to, one’s country.” Different people, however, have different ideas of what it means to be patriotic in specific situations. For example, Americans are divided over whether it is unpatriotic for a professional football player to kneel during the national anthem as a protest against police violence. Another example: the people who stormed the U.S. Capitol on January 6, 2021 reportedly consider themselves to be “patriots” who felt justified using violence in an effort to overturn the 2020 Presidential election.

What does patriotism mean to you?

Select one issue from the list below and discuss what patriotic actions you and others in your community could take locally in response to your chosen issue.

* The current war in Ukraine

* The global climate crisis

* The threat of nuclear war

* Gun violence in schools

* Threats to democracy and the rule of law

Describe specific actions that people in your community should take, or things that people should refrain from doing, or sacrifices that people should be willing to make, on a local level that would make positive contributions toward resolving your selected issue. Examples might include volunteering as election workers; voting in state and local elections; raising funds or campaigning for a political candidate; assisting refugees from war or natural disasters; switching to electric vehicles; adopting and promoting alternative sources of energy; cleaning up public lands; reducing pollution and waste; protesting, writing or testifying to change a government policy or law; donating your time or money to a public cause, such as circulating petitions to make Alaska a nuclear weapons-free zone; participating in nonviolent dispute resolution techniques to help opposing parties reach consensus on taking action together.

Tell us your own ideas for addressing your selected issue. Explain why or how your proposed actions in response to your chosen issue would demonstrate patriotism and how you would encourage community involvement and cooperation. If you have other values that would conflict with patriotism, explain how those values would affect or shape your actions.

Your essay can be submitted by email to vfp100@gmail.com or mailed to Veterans For Peace Chapter 100, P.O. Box 21991, Juneau, AK 99802. Successful essays will be 500 to 750 words in length. The winning essay will receive an award of $2,000.
