{"id":1731,"date":"2015-04-07T18:50:33","date_gmt":"2015-04-08T02:50:33","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/communications.blogs.kpbsd.k12.ak.us\/wpmu\/?p=1731"},"modified":"2015-04-07T18:50:33","modified_gmt":"2015-04-08T02:50:33","slug":"education-funding-and-kpbsd","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/kpbsd.org\/schools\/comm-test\/2015\/04\/07\/education-funding-and-kpbsd\/","title":{"rendered":"Education Funding and KPBSD"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: center\"><span style=\"color: #008080\"><strong><em>Please contact Conference Committee members* and legislators to voice your opinion about <\/em><\/strong><strong><em>the proposed reductions to education funding.<\/em><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>The Senate Finance Committee amended <\/strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.legis.state.ak.us\/basis\/get_bill.asp?bill=HB%20%2072&amp;session=29\"><strong>HB 72<\/strong><\/a><strong>, with a 4.1 percent reduction to the <em>Foundation Formula<\/em> educational funding on April 2, 2015. The impact to KPBSD is:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Reduction of state contribution to KPBSD: $4,238,432<\/li>\n<li>Reduction of local (borough) contribution to KPBSD: $977,007<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Governor Walker proposed an operating budget reduction of educational <em>One-Time Funding<\/em> in <\/strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.legis.state.ak.us\/basis\/get_bill.asp?bill=HB%20%2072&amp;session=29\"><strong>HB 72<\/strong><\/a><strong>.<\/strong>The impact to KPBSD is:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Reduction of state contribution to KPBSD: $2,262,989<\/li>\n<li>Reduction of local (borough) contribution to KPBSD: $520,487<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Potential 2015-2016 revenue loss to KPBSD: $7,998,915<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Total possible reduction in state funding to KPBSD: $6,501,421<\/li>\n<li>Total possible reduction in local (borough) funding to KPBSD: $1,497,494<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>KPBSD understands that difficult financial decisions have to be made<\/strong>. We have confidence in our legislators and Speaker of the House Chenault, who have demonstrated support and advocacy for public education on the Kenai Peninsula.<br \/>\n<strong>Over 80 percent of our 2015-2016 budget is related to staff (salary and benefits).<\/strong> An $8 million reduction translates into the potential loss of up to 100 positions and vital programs.<br \/>\n<strong>KPBSD is committed to deliver a quality education to our students and provide stability for our staff and communities.<\/strong> These unanticipated reductions, this late in the budgeting process, compromises our ability to prepare our students for their future.<br \/>\n<strong>It is a constitutional responsibility of the State of Alaska to provide and maintain a public school system open to every child.<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>*The <a href=\"http:\/\/www.legis.state.ak.us\/basis\/get_bill.asp?bill=HB%20%2072&amp;session=29\">HB72<\/a> Conference Committee comprised of Senate and House Finance standing committee members was announced April 7, 2015.<\/strong> The members are: <a href=\"http:\/\/new.akleg.gov\/legislator.php?id=NEU\">Representative Mark Neuman<\/a>; <a href=\"http:\/\/new.akleg.gov\/legislator.php?id=GAR\">Representative Les Gara<\/a>; <a href=\"http:\/\/new.akleg.gov\/legislator.php?id=THP\">Representative Steve Thompson<\/a>; <a href=\"http:\/\/new.akleg.gov\/legislator.php?id=KEP\">Senator Pete Kelly<\/a>; <a href=\"http:\/\/new.akleg.gov\/legislator.php?id=MAI\">Senator Anna MacKinnon<\/a>; and <a href=\"http:\/\/new.akleg.gov\/legislator.php?id=OLS\">Senator Donny Olson<\/a>.
