{"id":1912,"date":"2015-02-28T10:57:05","date_gmt":"2015-02-28T19:57:05","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/communications.blogs.kpbsd.k12.ak.us\/wpmu\/?p=1912"},"modified":"2015-02-28T10:57:05","modified_gmt":"2015-02-28T19:57:05","slug":"become-fluent-kpbsd-english-language-learner-program","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/kpbsd.org\/schools\/comm-test\/2015\/02\/28\/become-fluent-kpbsd-english-language-learner-program\/","title":{"rendered":"Become fluent: KPBSD English Language Learner program"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>February 2015<a href=\"http:\/\/communications.blogs.kpbsd.k12.ak.us\/wpmu\/files\/2014\/05\/KPBSD-50-years-logo.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-1384 size-medium\" src=\"http:\/\/communications.blogs.kpbsd.k12.ak.us\/wpmu\/files\/2014\/05\/KPBSD-50-years-logo-300x239.png\" alt=\"KPBSD 50 years logo\" width=\"300\" height=\"239\" \/><\/a><br \/>\n<strong>KPBSD\u2019s English Language Learner (ELL) program has seen a 55 percent increase in the number of Limited English Proficient (LEP) students in the district since 2010.<\/strong> Currently:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>286 LEP students are enrolled across 34 KPBSD schools<\/li>\n<li>23 languages are represented in the following categories:\n<ul>\n<li>Eastern European-Russian<\/li>\n<li>Asian-SE Asian<\/li>\n<li>Northern European<\/li>\n<li>Pacific Islander<\/li>\n<li>Native Alaskan<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>23 ELL paraprofessionals base their support activities on students\u2019 specific academic needs<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Administration of the annual English proficiency assessment, ACCESS, is currently underway. State and federal requirements include the administration of this annual test. The test:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Measures student progress<\/li>\n<li>Determines students\u2019 eligibility to be reclassified as non-LEP (LEP students who pass the test are exited from LEP status)<\/li>\n<li>Gives educators valuable information to inform their teaching<\/li>\n<li>Gives the ELL office information that can be used to determine relevant professional development and possible program modifications<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>This is the last year the assessment will be administered in paper-pencil format.
