{"id":3708,"date":"2017-05-17T15:39:13","date_gmt":"2017-05-17T23:39:13","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/communications.blogs.kpbsd.k12.ak.us\/?p=3708"},"modified":"2017-05-17T15:39:13","modified_gmt":"2017-05-17T23:39:13","slug":"dolphins-class-names-drug-detective-k9","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/kpbsd.org\/schools\/comm-test\/2017\/05\/17\/dolphins-class-names-drug-detective-k9\/","title":{"rendered":"Dolphin&#039;s class names drug detective K9"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"article-title\">As part of the\u00a0Safer Alaska initiative, Governor Bill Walker \u00a0announced the\u00a0names for the two new Alaska State Trooper drug detection K9s. \u00a0K9-B will be named Mak (short for Kachemak, as in Kachemak Bay) -that name was suggested by Hannah Dolphin\u2019s class at Kalifornsky Beach Elementary School in Kenai!<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><strong>Hannah Dolphin,\u00a06<sup>th<\/sup> Grade Teacher,\u00a0K-Beach Elementary said, &#8220;We\u2019re excited! One of my students, Karley Johnson,\u00a0<\/strong><strong>was the one who came up with the name. When I asked her why she picked it she said, &#8216;I thought of it because my dad goes fishing a lot. He fishes in Kachemak Bay and I was thinking of some of the days I\u2019ve gone fishing with him.&#8217; My class also thought the name was fun because of the play on words with Kachemak, like \u201cCatch \u2018em, Mak!\u201d<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>As 5<sup>th<\/sup> graders, K-Beach students have the opportunity to participate in D.A.R.E, thanks to the Soldotna Police Department. Officer Brennan comes in each year to teach students about positive decision making, and resisting drugs. Our school works closely with the police department, and I think these are really good ways to foster positive relationships between students and law enforcement.&#8221;<\/strong><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/communications.blogs.kpbsd.k12.ak.us\/files\/2017\/05\/K9-Contest-Winner-K9B-K-Beach.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-3710\" src=\"http:\/\/communications.blogs.kpbsd.k12.ak.us\/files\/2017\/05\/K9-Contest-Winner-K9B-K-Beach-1024x791.jpg\" alt=\"K9 Contest Winner K9B K-Beach\" width=\"517\" height=\"399\" \/><\/a><br \/>\nK9-A will be named M.O.C.H.A. (acronym for Meth, Opioids, Cocaine, Heroin, Alaska); the name was suggested by Ryan Engebretsen\u2019s class at Teeland Middle School in the Matanuska-Susitna Valley.<br \/>\n\u201cM.O.C.H.A and Mak will play important, integral roles in our efforts to create a Safer Alaska,\u201d Governor Walker said. \u201cI\u2019m so grateful for the participation of Alaska 6<sup>th<\/sup> graders and citizens across the state in selecting these names. I look forward to seeing the important work these new dogs will do.\u201d<br \/>\nThe State Troopers will use the K9s to help detect opioids and other drugs in a variety of places across the state in continued efforts to tamp down on drug use and trafficking.
