It&#8217;s important for you to know what to do before, during, and after a school emergency, weather related delay start, or school closure. KPBSD regularly practices safety drills in schools, and includes law enforcement in our\u00a0<a title=\"ALICE trainings\" href=\"http:\/\/www.kpbsd.k12.ak.us\/Workarea\/DownloadAsset.aspx?id=34276\">ALICE trainings<\/a>\u00a0for school emergencies.\u00a0<a title=\"School delays and closures protocol\" href=\"http:\/\/www.kpbsd.k12.ak.us\/communications.aspx?id=22877\">School delays and closures protocol<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"text-decoration: underline\"><span style=\"color: #800000;text-decoration: underline\"><strong>Before\u00a0<\/strong><\/span><\/span><strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline\"><span style=\"color: #800000;text-decoration: underline\">A School Emergency<\/span><\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/i1.wp.com\/communications.blogs.kpbsd.k12.ak.us\/wpmu\/files\/2014\/01\/KPBSD-logo-4c-no-tag.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-thumbnail wp-image-1016\" src=\"http:\/\/i2.wp.com\/communications.blogs.kpbsd.k12.ak.us\/wpmu\/files\/2014\/01\/KPBSD-logo-4c-no-tag-150x150.jpg?resize=150%2C150\" alt=\"Print\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" \/><\/a><\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"color: #008000\"><strong>PARENTS NEED TO BE PREPARED<\/strong><\/span><br \/>\n<strong>Contact information<\/strong>\u00a0entered in PowerSchool is used to make emergency contact with parents. So that KPBSD can keep you informed, make sure your child\u2019s emergency contact information is accurate, current, and updated as needed. That information may be used during an emergency to generate automated phone messages, emails, or text messages to parents from schools or the district office.\u00a0<strong>Parents need to go to the school office to update and sign their information.<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Download the\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.kpbsd.k12.ak.us\/communications.aspx?id=31262\"><strong>KPBSD Mobile App<\/strong><\/a>\u00a0so you can automatically receive emergency update push notifications<\/li>\n<li>Become familiar with the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/kpbsd\"><strong>KPBSD Facebook<\/strong><\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/kpbsd\"><strong>Twitter<\/strong><\/a>\u00a0social media sites where emergency information is posted<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<br \/>\n<strong><span style=\"color: #008000\">PARENTS NEED TO BE INFORMED<\/span><br \/>\nFamiliarize yourself with these KPBSD emergency terms and procedures:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong><span style=\"color: #000080\">Stay Put:<\/span>\u00a0<\/strong>A \u201cstay put\u201d takes place when a potential threat is identified in the school\u2019s neighborhood. All school doors are locked but classes continue inside as normal. No entry into or exit from the school is allowed. Students will not be released until the situation is resolved and the \u201cstay put\u201d has been rescinded.<\/li>\n<li><strong><span style=\"color: #000080\">Safety Closure:<\/span>\u00a0<\/strong>A \u201csafety closure\u201d takes place when a violent intruder is identified on school grounds or in the school building. The ALICE protocols will be followed. No entry into or exit from the school is allowed. Students will not be released until the situation is resolved and the \u201csafety closure\u201d has been rescinded.<\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #000080\"><strong>Shelter-In-Place:<\/strong><\/span>\u00a0A \u201cshelter-in-place\u201d takes place when students take refuge in designated areas to be protected from hazardous materials or severe weather. Entry or exit from the schools will be controlled.<\/li>\n<li><strong><span style=\"color: #000080\">Evacuation<\/span>:\u00a0<\/strong>In the event of certain building emergencies, students will be relocated to an appropriate evacuation assembly area. Students will be released to parents per district student release procedures.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;color: #800000\"><strong>During A School Emergency<\/strong><\/span><\/h3>\n<p><strong><span style=\"color: #008000\">PARENTS AND GUARDIANS<\/span><br \/>\n<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Should\u00a0<strong>trust\u00a0<\/strong>that during an emergency the school and district is first doing what is needed to protect students, and then communicating to parents as quickly as possible when we have full and accurate information.<\/li>\n<li>Should trust that staff and students are prepared for emergency situations. Schools participate in emergency drills throughout the year, and staff and emergency responders know the best procedures for keeping students safe.<\/li>\n<li><strong>SHOULD NOT call or rush to your child\u2019s school<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>Phone lines, staff, and local roads are needed for emergency response efforts.<\/li>\n<li><strong>SHOULD NOT phone or text your child<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>The sound or vibration from cell phones and phone conversations could put students in danger. Also, students need to be paying attention to the instructions from trained staff. Conflicting instructions from parents may put a child\u2019s safety at risk.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3><strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline\"><span style=\"color: #800000;text-decoration: underline\">A<\/span><\/span><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;color: #800000\">fter a School Emergency<\/span><\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"color: #008000\"><strong>HOW WILL I BE REUNITED WITH MY CHILD?<\/strong><\/span><br \/>\nParents and guardians will be directed by school or public safety officials to their child\u2019s specific location. This information will be distributed via the previously discussed emergency modes of communication. Students will be released\u00a0<strong>ONLY<\/strong>\u00a0to parents and guardians or other designated individuals who are documented as emergency contacts. All individuals will be required to present a valid picture ID such as a driver\u2019s license, military ID, or passport.
