Born in Southcentral Alaska I grew up outdoors. After ten years of big mountain guiding, I wanted to shift to teaching children to be safe and happy outdoors, so I pursued a Master of Science in Outdoor Environmental Education with a K-8 Teaching Certification. Throughout college I wanted a school that fit my Alaskan teaching style, which led to me teaching kindergarten at Kellogg Field School, a great introduction to Alaska’s education system. I also discovered my love of stained glass, ukulele, salmon seining and the community of Homer. I spent my last semester of college student teaching with Jon Kulhanek when Covid-19 struck, making me feel confident that outdoor classrooms, place-based education, environmental education-my teaching philosophy-is how we will best serve our students now.
