engaged and active beyond the school day. These include:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Intramural Sports<\/strong> \u2013 Offered in multiple seasons throughout the school year, intramurals promote participation, teamwork, and physical activity in a fun, supportive environment.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Boys and Girls Club \u2013 NNS Clubhouse<\/strong> \u2013 Provides afterschool care and enrichment activities. This program is operated by the Boys and Girls Club and rents space within our building.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Girl Scouts<\/strong> \u2013 Encourages leadership, friendship, and service. This organization also rents space in our building to host meetings and events.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Nikiski Freestyle Wrestling Club<\/strong> \u2013 Offers students the opportunity to learn and grow in the sport of wrestling. This club is independently operated and rents facility space at NNS.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>These programs reflect our school community\u2019s commitment to supporting the whole child\u2014academically, socially, and physically\u2014while partnering with outside organizations that share our vision.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">iReady (Math)<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>The median percent progress towards Typical Growth for NNS is 91%. Typical Growth is the average annual growth for a student at their grade and baseline placement level.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">CKLA (<strong>Core Knowledge Language Arts<\/strong>)<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>During the 2024\u20132025 school year, Nikiski North Star Elementary continued the implementation of the <strong>Core Knowledge Language Arts (CKLA)<\/strong> curriculum. Now adopted districtwide as the Tier I language arts program, CKLA is designed to build strong foundational literacy skills through a structured, knowledge-rich approach. It emphasizes reading, writing, speaking, and listening while introducing students to a broad range of content in history, science, literature, and the arts. Together with our strong, supportive community, we strive to create an inspiring and nurturing environment where every student can thrive.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Supporting a Positive and Safe School Environment at NNS<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>At Nikiski North Star, we are committed to creating a school environment where every child feels safe, supported, and ready to learn. Over the past two years, we\u2019ve focused on building a positive school culture by teaching social-emotional skills and reinforcing positive behavior through schoolwide expectations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What We Focused On:<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Last year, we introduced tools like <em>Kelso\u2019s Choices<\/em>, <em>Zones of Regulation<\/em>, and <em>Second Step<\/em> to help students learn how to solve problems, manage emotions, and treat others with respect. We also began using Positive Behavior Interventions and Supports (PBIS) to create clear behavior expectations across our school.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What We Saw:<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>In the 2023\u20132024 school year, our office recorded <strong>157 behavior referrals<\/strong>. Students also reported feeling more respected and confident in handling conflict, according to the district\u2019s Hanover Survey.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This year, our goal was to reduce those referrals by 25% by May 2025. We worked hard to meet this goal by continuing SEL lessons, setting consistent expectations, and checking in with students regularly. In total, we recorded <strong>163 referrals<\/strong> this year\u2014a slight increase. While we didn\u2019t see the reduction we hoped for, the positive changes in how students feel about school are worth celebrating.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What Students Are Saying:<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>The <strong>2025 Student Climate &amp; Connectedness Survey<\/strong> shows encouraging growth:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>95% of students said they care about our school (up from 89%).<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>92% said they\u2019re encouraged to do their best (up from 87%).<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>75% said students help each other\u2014even if they aren\u2019t friends (up from 67%).<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>83% said the principal listens to student ideas (up from 67%).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>These responses tell us that students are feeling more connected to their school, to each other, and to the adults who support them.
