“Elena Basargin is definitely a student to be recognized,” said Principal Wojciak. “Her list of accomplishments is extensive, which exemplifies her perseverance and dedication. Elena is not a person who tends to stick out of the crowd with loud actions or reactions, yet, she does shine when it comes to persistence, responsibility, and accountability. Elena can be counted on to finish what she starts, completing every task with devotion and an innate desire to do it precisely.”
Elena actively involved herself with each opportunity offered. She was a member of the school soccer team, a two-time Project Grad summer institute participant, valued Battle of the Books team member, and Youth Court judge. She was accepted into the Rural Alaska Honors Institute (RAHI) at the University of Alaska Fairbanks, and accepted multiple scholarships. In addition to her steadfast dedication to school, Elena’s personality is a quintessential match. She is delightful, humorous, and witty. She may not always be the first to catch a joke, but with a deeper understanding, she has the biggest laugh. “Her contagious smile is one that will be missed around our school,” said Principal Wojciak. “With grateful hearts for all she has offered, we wish her the best in her continued success.”

David Sanarov is the standout senior selected for 2017 – 2018 at Voznesenka School. He has game, humbleness, and an incredibly kind heart. David is the type of person that most of us want to aspire to become. David’s athleticism is an inherited family trait that did not skip any of the six boys in his family. When following in the enormous footsteps of his brothers one might think that there could be no way for David to also fill those shoes. Astonishingly, he was no exception to the talent that came before him.

 David was no stranger to media attention during his high school career. On the local level David was featured in the Homer News as the Senior Spotlight student, he was heavily covered at the State level in the Alaska Dispatch News, and on the National level he was given much attention in the New York Times.
“I had the fortunate pleasure of attending a Close Up trip to Washington D.C. and New York City with David as one of the students,” said Principal Michael Wojciak. “Being such a kind, polite, and thoughtful student his participation made the trip an even greater experience for myself and our other chaperone Ksenia Kuzmin who similarly gives David high praise as a student, community member, and family member. It is hard to imagine, but David was an elementary student when I first started my position as the principal of Voznesenka School. He is certainly a student that I will never forget, mostly for his humility and overwhelmingly positive personality. His career will take him in the direction of his family’s commercial fishing business, where he will eventually become a boat owner, permit holder, and captain. We wish him safety, good health, and prosperity as he disembarks from Voznesenka School.”

“Voznesenka School is proud to recognize David Kalugin as an accomplished member of our 2017 graduating class who created a reputation of being witty and laid back,” said Principal Wojciak.
Starting his school career at McNeil Canyon School, which he attended from kindergarten through sixth grade, David completed seventh through twelfth grade years at Voznesenka. As a student, David had a plethora of experiences. He was on the football team for two years, attended three construction classes in Homer, and was involved with Project Grad. Most memorable for David were his years in football and the end of the year activities such as beach day. His efforts steered him towards earning both the Project Grad and Alaska Performance Scholarships.
School was an important part of his life, but so was his family, and commercial fishing. For the last two summers David was a captain on his family’s fishing vessel, and prior to that he spent several years as a deckhand. However, David does not have an interest in making fishing his livelihood, rather, his dream is to become an industrial electrician. He is currently working towards an apprenticeship in this field. He’s liked electronics since he was a little boy, and has earned respect by repairing inoperative cell phones.
As a school and community we wish David all the best in accomplishing his dreams and goals. His ever present smile will be missed, yet remembered as we resume school in the fall.

While some twelfth graders across the country were suffering the burnout and underachievement symptomatic of the spring-time ailment commonly known as senioritis, Alexey Ivanov from Voznesenka School has made the year of his graduation his best one yet. Not only has his GPA improved dramatically while taking a rigorous program that meets the Alaska Performance Scholarship curriculum requirements, he has been a model of responsibility and persistence in making arrangements for his post-secondary education at Alaska Job Corps. Job Corps offers free career and technical training to eligible young people ages 16-24. Their admission procedure, however, can be difficult to navigate. It demands patience and persistence for a candidate to advance through the multiple-step application and interview process, as well as to comply with all the documentation requirements. Alexey, who will be attending Job Corps for Facilities Maintenance this fall, after commercial fishing this summer, demonstrated excellent initiative and follow through every step of the way.
Alexey is a prime example of the success and confidence that can be gained when young people invest themselves into the academic, career and technical education, and athletic opportunities available. Although he may not have realized it at the time, the choices Alexey made to fully engage in his coursework, as well as to participate on his school’s football and wrestling teams, and in after school CTE academies, have had the summative effect of molding him into a well-rounded, enthusiastic graduate who is ready to tackle the broader world that awaits him after graduation. Student centered initiatives shape Voznesenka School

Several staff members at Voznesenka School have diligently worked to create an environment that makes students feel connected to our school, rather than school being something they attend as a requirement. Making aesthetic modifications to the facility, offering additional courses of interest, implementing a school-wide student management system and providing opportunities for our students to participate in cocurricular activities are some of the approaches we have used to produce this transformation. To the outside eye our most visible changes are the athletic opportunities we now offer our students.
Two years ago our school only had a few intramural activities available to students. Next year, we will have four ASAA sanctioned sports available at Voznesenka School, as well as a few activities for our elementary and middle school students. These opportunities bring a sense of pride, belonging and commitment to Voznesenka. Since the school is the only public entity in our village, it has been challenging to increase school-community interaction. Sporting events have opened new doors of communication among staff, students, and community members through attendance at games and meets.
Increased cocurricular opportunities are also positive persuaders for students’ academic accomplishments. Grade checks keep our athletes motivated to meet school and district expectations. Participation in practice and games is dependent on attendance, which positivity impacts students’ time in school. Furthermore, athletics will encourage more students to graduate from Voznesenka School.
We are proud of the student-centered initiatives shaping the culture of Voznesenka School. Striving to meet the needs of our students is our first priority, which does give them a sense of belonging. Continued efforts will enhance the engagement of students at their school.

Nadejda Reutov receives Golden Apple award

“Nadejda Reutov is a custodian who is dedicated to her job and the Voznesenka School. Her eight and a half years of exceptional service have made our school a welcoming place for students, staff and visitors,” said Michael Wojciak, school principal.
Nadejda has a “do what it takes” type of attitude and often goes above and beyond her job duties for our school. Essential responsibilities include cleaning, maintenance, safety and security, and teamwork. Not only does Nadejda excel at her job duties, she is also an effective communicator with a pleasant personality. She greets students and staff in the hallways and passing between buildings. As a result, she has gained the respect of the students. This is evident by their attention and reaction to her voiced concerns about the upkeep of the school. Furthermore, Nadejda communicates with her colleagues throughout the school on a daily basis. She pays attention to details and puts forth her best efforts to fulfill any requests. She rarely misses a Site Council meeting, and is always willing to be open and honest about the issues involving the school.
When Nadejda does need to be away she never leaves it up to the school to find a substitute, and takes care of this on her own. She makes sure the substitute has the necessary keys and everything is prepared at school to make a substitute’s work as easy as possible. Nadejda is also a kind donor and volunteer to Voznesenka School. She often brings homemade goodies to share with staff, she donates to school programs like consumer science, and she and her husband help with repairs when needed.
Principal Wojciak said, “Nadejda Reutov’s personal pride is visible within our school, she pours her passion into every aspect of her job. She never complains about her responsibilities, is understanding in regard to school activities, and takes initiative without needing direction. Nadejda has an incomparable work ethic and is an invaluable member of the Voznesenka staff and school culture.”
