Homer Flex School, Class of 2018

During her junior year, due to unforeseen circumstances, Amber Bridgeman faced the tough decision to follow her family to Hawaii or stay in Alaska to complete her high school diploma. She opted to transfer to Homer Flex, and she made the most of her decision. Amber quickly demonstrated that she possesses the maturity to manage both her personal life and school on her own. A hard worker and an organized student, Amber decided to take Jumpstart courses during her senior year at the Kachemak Bay Campus. This self-motivation and commitment to her future inspired the students around her, and has guided her on the path to post-secondary education in the health sciences.
Amber will attend a CNA program in Anchorage this summer. Granted full funding to complete the program through a migrant education scholarship, Amber plans to continue her post-secondary education at UAA-KBC in the nursing program next year. She is also the recipient of the Kachemak Bay Rotary Club’s Vocational Scholarship as well as the Homer Emblem Club #350’s Scholarship. Given her determination and focus, there is no doubt that she will find success.

Larion Kuzmin Homer Flex s
Larion enrolled at Homer Flex his sophomore year, focused on receiving a high school diploma. A Russian Old Believer who has captained his own commercial boat since he was 14, Larion brought with him the tenacity and resolve acquired through years of gillnetting in Cordova.
As an English Language Learner who struggled with reading, Larion worked hard for every credit. With his quiet and reserved attitude, he advocated for individualized learning, one on one help, and an alternative schedule. This allowed him to continue fishing while still working toward the degree that means so much to him.
With the support of his family and the staff at Flex, Larion earned his diploma this winter. His January graduation ceremony was a celebration of all his hard work!

Southern peninsula school start and end time options

Soldotna, October 12, 2016—Changes to school start and end times will begin in August, 2017, and in order to inform and gather input, three southern peninsula community meetings will take place in November. The same content will be presented at each meeting. Parents, KPBSD staff, students, and community members are invited and encouraged to attend a community meeting of their choosing:

  • Tuesday, November 1, 2016, 6:00 PM, Ninilchik School

  • Wednesday, November 2, 2016, 6:00 PM, Homer High School

  • Thursday, November 10, 6:00 PM, Chapman School, Anchor Point

Following community meetings and feedback from community members, on Tuesday, October 4, 2016, school principals met with district administration and staff to develop three options for new school start and end times in the southern peninsula. The preferred option from all school administrators is “X”. However, two additional options were also developed. Option “Y” adds ten minutes to start and end times, and option “Z” is most problematic, swaps the start times, and tiers schools without like needs.

Next steps:

  • The transportation department analyzed X, Y, and Z options, and transportation routes for X and Y are viable.
  • School administrators will share the three options with site councils, and gather input.
  • November community meetings will be an excellent time for a shared conversation and discussion.
  • Principals will evaluate input and make final recommendations to district administration.
  • KPBSD transportation will make certain bus transportation for the chosen option is viable.
  • The district anticipates completion and a final decision before winter break so that parents and communities can begin to plan for the changes that will start in August, 2017.

Parents, staff, and community members are encouraged to attend a community meeting in November.

When Jenna Kilcher enrolled at Homer Flex School, she was behind on credits and questioning the role education would play in her life. This year, she graduated with the Class of 2016, became a Certified Registered Nurse, and is determined to further her education and continue her path in the medical field. Jenna’s transformation from reluctant learner to head of her class came with a lot of hard work and determination, but with the support of her family, she persevered. Next year, she hopes to continue this trend at the Kenai Peninsula College. and eventually the University of Alaska, Anchorage.
