Garrett Koch, Class of 2019

Garrett Koch came to Ninilchik in the sixth grade. “He immediately fell into the routine that a lot of Wolverines fall into, and that was spending all of his time in the gym,” said Principal Ambrosier. “He ended up playing for three different varsity coaches in Ninilchik and during that span, and was part of two 1A state championships. Garrett continues to spend a lot of time practicing his game as he has dreams to eventually play professional basketball. However, in the meantime, he will be moving to Oregon to pursue a degree in business. He already has a jump on college due to his hard work here at Ninilchik participating in jumpstart classes through Kenai Peninsula College (KPC). During his salutatorian speech, he commended his coach, Nick Finley, for assisting him to develop into the person and player that he is. We wish him the best of luck in his future endeavors.”

The mission of the Kenai Peninsula Borough School District is to empower all learners to positively shape their futures.

Olivia Delgado
Ninilchik School, Class of 2018

Olivia Delgado graduated this year as the Valedictorian with a cumulative GPA of 4.0. She studied at Ninilchik School for 12 years and from sixth grade on always earned A grades. During her valedictorian speech, she talked about how it is important to move forward and learn from our mistakes, and that people tend to learn more from trying something and failing than not trying at all. Olivia was active in many activities at Ninilchik. She invested time helping with elementary basketball and also took care of the books for many of the middle school and high school basketball games. Olivia lettered in both volleyball and basketball all four years. She was a quiet leader; she led more by example than by her words. She always had a kind word when she met up with the younger kids in the elementary.
Olivia has dreams of becoming a nurse—a field where caring and kindness is important as knowing how to perform your job with excellence. She will be attending Kenai Peninsula College before transitioning to the UAA pre-nursing program.

Christmas Cheer in the Ninilchik Senior Center

“Singing in a small choir group this year was the best decision I have made! It was my way of relaxing after a long day of school. I became closer with some of the girls I barely knew. When we had a chance to sing carols at the senior center, I refused to pass this up! Even though I am glad we no longer have the pressure of performing in front of our school for a grade, I miss singing in front of a crowd. We practice two days a week during our advisory singing our hearts out. The senior center performance is the best memory I have of choir since I joined last year. I feel like I am giving back to the community that does so much for us. Even though we had a small crowd, I enjoyed every second if it. It was a great experience and I hope to do it in the future!” –Tala Marystar Hadro, Ninilchik School student

“My Foods 1 class made cookies for our senior center, and Eric Simondsen’s choir class delivered them to the senior center, and sang songs on December 19, 2017. The girls performed admirably. Mr. Simondsen conducted a great medley of Christmas time favorites, including a number from ‘The Grinch’, requested by the choir.  Snow was falling and the seniors very much enjoyed the young voices and cookies provided. We hope to make it an annual event.” – Joel Hilbrink, Ninilchik School teacher

Mikayla Clark | Ninilchik School #Classof2017

Mikayla Clark
Ninilchik School
Class of 2017

Ninilchik School Mikayla s
Mikayla Clark has been an outstanding student at Ninilchik for the past 10 years. “I’ve had the pleasure of knowing her for the past six years, and during these years I’ve seen her grow into a mature, confident young woman,” said Principal Jeff Ambrosier. “Through the I-team process she started taking both math and language arts classes for high school credit and she didn’t stop there. She sits on the State Future Farmers of America (FFA) team and this has allowed her to travel on a national level to talk to kids about not only FFA but also growing as a young adult. In addition to her academic success, Mikayla has also been a member of three varsity sports and has been part of state track and basketball.”
Mikayla’s love of Alaska and all that it offers has helped shape her plans after high school. Her post high school goals include attending University of Alaska, Southeast, for her bachelor’s degree in environmental science and then onto the University of Idaho for a masters in biological engineering.
She will be missed at Ninilchik school and we not only wish her the best of luck in her future plans but also thank her for helping make Ninilchik a better school.

Changing times for schools in Southern Peninsula

Plan ahead

In August, 2017,  with the start of the new school year, ten school locations in the southern peninsula will begin with new school start and end times. This change is taking place to accommodate a switch from single-tier to double-tier bus transportation, which is already in effect for other schools throughout the KPBSD. No changes will take place in the 2016-2017 school year.

Bus transportation
Important transportation clarifications taking effect with the change to two-tier busing in the southern peninsula include:

  • KPBSD transportation routing will only be from home-to-school, and school-to-home.
  • Some situations in which out-of-area transportation is provided for students to attend a school outside their attendance area currently exist, and will not be available beginning with the 2017-2018 school year.
  • Parents may continue to have a child attend an out of area school through the Out-of-Area Attendance Request process (see E 5116(a)) but KPBSD will no longer provide bus transportation if a bus serving another school was available.
  • Bus routing and schedules will be updated in the summer of 2017, and available on the KPBSD website, at the same time as districtwide school routes are posted.

A series of community meetings took place throughout 2016, with parents, KPBSD staff, students, and community members in attendance. School administrators met, and worked together to create the new school start and end times. If you have questions about specific schools, please contact the school principal with your questions.
Southern Peninsula principals continue to meet together and work with community service providers to discuss after school childcare, recreation, and structured activity options to accommodate family needs for the 2017-2018 school year.
Changes will take place at southern peninsula schools served by bus transportation and include:
Chapman School
Fireweed Academy
Homer Flex School
Homer High School
Homer Middle School
McNeil Canyon Elementary
Ninilchik School
Paul Banks Elementary
West Homer Elementary

News Release: Meeting dates | school start and end time options

Southern peninsula school start and end time options

Soldotna, October 12, 2016—Changes to school start and end times will begin in August, 2017, and in order to inform and gather input, three southern peninsula community meetings will take place in November. The same content will be presented at each meeting. Parents, KPBSD staff, students, and community members are invited and encouraged to attend a community meeting of their choosing:

  • Tuesday, November 1, 2016, 6:00 PM, Ninilchik School

  • Wednesday, November 2, 2016, 6:00 PM, Homer High School

  • Thursday, November 10, 6:00 PM, Chapman School, Anchor Point

Following community meetings and feedback from community members, on Tuesday, October 4, 2016, school principals met with district administration and staff to develop three options for new school start and end times in the southern peninsula. The preferred option from all school administrators is “X”. However, two additional options were also developed. Option “Y” adds ten minutes to start and end times, and option “Z” is most problematic, swaps the start times, and tiers schools without like needs.
kpbsd-so-pen-school-start-and-end-time-options
Next steps:

  • The transportation department analyzed X, Y, and Z options, and transportation routes for X and Y are viable.
  • School administrators will share the three options with site councils, and gather input.
  • November community meetings will be an excellent time for a shared conversation and discussion.
  • Principals will evaluate input and make final recommendations to district administration.
  • KPBSD transportation will make certain bus transportation for the chosen option is viable.
  • The district anticipates completion and a final decision before winter break so that parents and communities can begin to plan for the changes that will start in August, 2017.

Parents, staff, and community members are encouraged to attend a community meeting in November.
