Dear Redoubt Elementary Staff and Families,

As many of you are aware, the Kenai Peninsula Borough School District is facing significant uncertainty regarding state education funding. As a result, the KPBSD Board of Education is considering the potential closure of Sterling Elementary School at the end of this school year.

If that decision is made, students from Sterling Elementary would be redistricted to attend Redoubt Elementary starting in the 2025–2026 school year. I want to take a moment to share what this would mean for the Redoubt School community.

First and foremost, school staffing at Redoubt would remain within our established pupil-teacher ratio (PTR) guidelines. Additional teaching staff would be added to support the increase in enrollment, ensuring that every student receives the attention and instruction they need.

In addition to the continued focus on small class sizes and high-quality instruction, Redoubt Elementary would gain an additional “specials” class—such as music, STEAM, or art—providing more opportunities for students to explore their interests and build their skills in a well-rounded learning environment.

We also want you to know that the hiring of a new principal for Redoubt Elementary will take place once a final determination is made regarding the potential closure of Sterling Elementary. This will allow us to move forward with clarity and ensure that leadership decisions are aligned with the needs of the school and community.

We understand that change brings questions, and we are committed to open communication and a smooth transition should this move forward. KPBSD will continue to communicate with Redoubt families through the PowerSchool Messenger system,  and will post updates about the school consolidation and principal hiring process on the KPBSD website and Facebook page. Our priority will always be to support our students, families, and staff through any changes.

Please don’t hesitate to reach out to Eric Pederson, Director of Elementary and K-12 Schools at 907.714.8860 or epederson@kpbsd.k12.ak.us if you have any questions.
