2021 Alaska History Teacher of the Year!

Myla Liljemark has been named the 2021 Alaska History Teacher of the Year, an award presented annually by the Gilder Lehrman Institute of American History, the nation’s leading organization dedicated to K-12 American history education.

In 2021, parents, students, teachers, and administrators nationwide nominated a record 8,510 teachers for the History Teacher of the Year Award.  Amidst a very competitive field, Myla Liljemark rose to the top in Alaska.

Inaugurated in 2004, the History Teacher of the Year Awards highlights the crucial importance of history education by honoring exceptional American history teachers from elementary school through high school.  The award honors one K-12 teacher from each state, the District of Columbia, Department of Defense schools and US Territories.  In fall 2021, the National History Teacher of the Year will be selected form the pool of state winners.

In addition to a $1000 honorarium, our school will receive a core archive of American history books and Gilder Lehrman educational materials and recognition at a ceremony in Alaska.

Welcome New Principal Matt Potter!

To the Seward Silvers Community

I would like to take a second to introduce myself.  My name is Matt Potter, and I have been asked to help lead Seward Middle School for the upcoming school year.  I have bounced around Alaska since I was in 1st Grade when my parents moved from Idaho to teach in Western Alaska.  I am a product of the UA system, receiving both my Bachelors and Teaching Certificate from UAA, and my MEd Leadership from UAS.  I started my career teaching Math in Anchorage and then moved north of Fairbanks where I ran a small school in a town called Circle.  Currently my wife, 3-year-old son, and I live in Sitka where I have been the assistant Principal and counselor.  We look forward to our new adventure in Seward, and I look forward to getting to know the staff, students and community that make up SMS when school starts next year.  Together, we can ensure our students will be successful both in and out of school!

Thank you,

Matt Potter
