School Culture Highlights

Cooper Landing School is a wonderful small K–12 school in Cooper Landing, Alaska, with strengths rooted in the community’s deep, long-standing belief in the importance of education. At Cooper Landing School, students benefit from a close-knit learning environment where caring educators know each child and encourage curiosity, confidence, and growth. Small classes and a broad K–12 community create meaningful opportunities to learn, contribute, and build lasting connections across grade levels. The school is more than a place to study: it is a welcoming community where students and parents are known, supported, and included, with shared pride and a strong family spirit.

Our shared commitment to learning, community, and family is rooted in the history of Cooper Landing School. Its story began in 1929, when community founder Beryl Lean, then 29, petitioned Territorial Commissioner of Education Lester Henderson for a school to serve six local children—a founding effort that reflects the community’s enduring belief that every child deserves an education. Classes first met in the Lean family’s cabin as the Riddiford School with Margaret Barnett as the inaugural teacher, whose housing and meals were kindly provided by the Leans, an early expression of the care and generosity that remain central to the school community. As the community grew, the school moved into the Cooper Landing Community Hall from 1952–1954 while a permanent site was prepared, and in 1955 the first dedicated schoolhouse was built on the property that still anchors the campus today—evidence of a shared commitment to making room for learning. Continued growth prompted additions in 1972—a classroom and a small gym the original building—and by 1982 the school took the shape families recognize now, when that small gym became classroom space and a half-size gymnasium, office, and kitchen were added to support a thriving K–12 program. These investments as the community grew reflect the value placed on providing students with the space and resources to learn. The original schoolhouse, honored with listing on the National Register of Historic Places in 1986, was moved and lovingly preserved as the Cooper Landing Historical Society Museum, a tangible link between the past and present and a reflection of the respect for education and community history that continues to be shared and celebrated.

Through generations, Cooper Landing School has remained deeply woven into community life, committed to academic excellence, service, and a healthy balance between school, family, and outdoor living; its students continue to learn, grow, and excel. Cooper Landing School is a warm, close-knit K–12 community, set on the banks of the world-famous Kenai River, where families find belonging and shared pride alongside strong academics. With fishing, hiking, camping, hunting, kayaking, cross-country skiing, and abundant wildlife—bear viewing, moose and bald eagle sightings, and rich birding—the community and school offer a remarkable learning environment that blends strong academics with the adventures of the Alaskan outdoors, and unique learning opportunities that are lasting and impactful.
