Athletics Eligibility Policy

Homer Middle School Policy

  • Students not in attendance during the full school day (or the last regular day of the week for weekend activities) will not be allowed to participate in school events, practices, or activities during the evening.
    • Exceptions may be made for documented school field trips, academic requirements, religious holidays, mandated court appointments, permit/ID appointments, or medical appointments. A parent must notify the school of the reason for the absence to determine if a student may participate in an activity and documentation must be provided in advance of the practice or activity, and the absence must be approved by the coach or administrator in advance.
  • Arriving more than 10 minutes late to first period counts as an absence and must be excused following the procedure in the previous bullet for a student to participate that day.
  • 2 tardies in a single day will result in an athlete being ineligible to compete or practice that day.
  • Student behavior may affect eligibility at the discretion of the coach and/or the principal.
  • Any athletes caught violating the HMS Academic Integrity policy (See HMS Student Handbook) are automatically ineligible for the next 2 competitions in the season. If a borough competition is impacted by this, each round counts as 1 competition. If a student is not in a sport when they are caught cheating, this consequence will be fulfilled during the next season they participate in.
  • Student eligibility report is run at 3:45 pm every Monday. Any student with an F on this report will be ineligible to participate in competition for the entire calendar week (Tuesday through Monday).

How we check eligibility at Homer Middle School

  • Students are responsible for regularly monitoring their grades in PowerSchool.
  • Parents can also monitor grades in PowerSchool through a parent account.
  • Principal runs an “Early Warning List” of any students with any Ds or Fs on Thursday morning and emails list to teachers and coaches.
  • Teachers and coaches notify any students on the early warning list that they currently have a D or F and are in danger of being ineligible.
  • All students are reminded to check their grades in PowerSchool prior to Monday’s eligibility report.
  • Principal runs the final eligibility report at 3:45 PM on Monday and emails list to teachers and coaches. ANY STUDENT WITH AN F ON THIS REPORT IS INELIGIBLE FOR THE ENTIRE NEXT WEEK (Tuesday-Monday). If anyone notices any mistakes or has any objections, they must notify the principal as soon as possible.
  • At practice on Monday, coaches will notify any players that are ineligible for that week.

Ineligible students are still expected to attend practices to be eligible in the future. Athletes will not be excused from practice to work on homework. Repeated ineligibility may result in being removed from the team and/or impact the way you are able to participate in practice.
