- Excused absence- a parent has notified the school that their child is or will be absent from school.
- Unexcused absence– a parent has not notified the school that their child is or will be absent from school.
- A student is considered absent from a class period once they are 10 minutes late.
Parents/guardians will be notified by mail and/or phone when their child has reached 10 absences (excused or unexcused) in a semester and every 5 absences after.
Prearranged Absences (PICK UP FORM AT HMS OFFICE)
When a student will be absent from school for 3 consecutive days or more, a prearranged absence form must be completed and submitted to the office in advance of the absence. The student is expected to be responsible for completing this form and following up with his or her teachers about missing work once he or she is back from the absence.
If a student will be absent more than 10 consecutive school days, the parent is required to meet with the principal to discuss the absence and determine next steps.
Tardy Policy
Students are expected to be on time to each class throughout the school day.
- 1 tardy- lunch detention
- 3 tardies- parent contact
- Multiple tardies in the same day will result in immediate parent contact.
- Lunch detentions will be served on the following day. Students will be notified of the detention by the end of the current day of school.
“On Time” means that a student is in class, in their seat, with their materials, ready to work when the bell rings.
Extra Curricular Attendance Rules
- Students who are not in attendance during the full school day will not be allowed to attend after school events or practice. Exceptions may be made for documented school field trips, academic requirements, religious holidays, mandated court appointments, permit/ID appointments, or medical appointments. A parent must notify the school of the reason for the absence to determine if a student may participate in an activity and documentation must be provided in advance of the practice or activity, and the absence must be approved by the coach or administrator in advance.
- Arriving more than 10 minutes late to first period counts as an absence and must be excused following the procedure in the previous bullets for a student to participate that day.
- 2 tardies in a single day will result in an athlete being ineligible to compete or practice that day.
Dance/Activity Night Attendance Requirements
- Students not in attendance during the full school day will not be allowed to attend. Exceptions will be made for documented religious, court, or medical appointments. A parent must notify the school of the reason for the absence to determine if a student may participate and documentation must be provided in advance of the activity. Arriving more than 10 minutes late to school or being tardy to 2 or more classes on the day are both considered an absence.
- Students must have at least an 80% attendance rate from the first day of school to the day of the event. If a student has 80% attendance or lower, they will be required to meet with Mrs. Redmond in advance of the activity to determine if they are allowed to attend.
- Parents will be notified if this applies to their child via email 2 weeks before the event.
- If notified, the parent must set up an in person meeting with Mrs. Redmond (and the student) to determine if the student will be allowed to attend based on the reasons for the absences, the number of absences, and progress towards set attendance goals.
