Vision

Mountain View Elementary collaboratively meets the needs of all diverse learners by creating a positive school environment which focuses on learning, builds hopefulness, celebrates effort, and guarantees a curriculum for all.

Mission

It is the mission of Mountain View Elementary, through a partnership of staff, parents/guardians, and the community to instill in students a love of learning, foster academic excellence, and create a safe environment in which students feel empowered to become lifelong learners and positive contributors to society.

Together, we will formulate assessments to drive instruction that is meaningful and applicable and that meets students’ unique needs.

We will ensure that students succeed by monitoring their progress, improvement, and overall accomplishments. Students will demonstrate that they are succeeding by actively participating in their own education.

Intervention Support

Mountain View has three full-time academic interventionists to support students in their literacy growth. Classroom teachers are also trained in intervention for both literacy and math. Mountain View Elementary uses evidence-based practices and follows the Science of Reading in our literacy instruction and intervention. Mountain View follows the RTI process for intervention. Mountain View also has a half-time gifted and talented teacher for extension and advancement. Mountain View has a part-time counselor to support student’s social and behavioral needs.

Afterschool Programs

Mountain View Elementary is in its inaugural year of our intramural sports program! This year, students can participate in soccer during the fall, basketball in the winter, and volleyball in the spring. We’ve also partnered with a school in Homer, allowing us to take turns hosting games and fostering positive sportsmanship and camaraderie. In addition to sports, we continue to offer a range of afterschool programs, including student leadership, and we proudly compete in the Battle of the Books, engaging our students in literacy and teamwork.

Honors and Recognitions

Mountain View Elementary is the only open-enrollment school in Kenai. What that means is that all students are welcome at Mountain View and guaranteed an education to meet their specific needs. We have an extensive special education department, which helps us ensure that all students are receiving their necessary services and support.

School Culture Highlights

Students and staff are highlighted. Students are recognized through positive office referrals and receiving Soaring Eagle feathers for showing kindness and being helpful. Mountain View Elementary has an extensive special education department and intervention program. Mountain View partners with the Kenaitze Indian Tribe for cultural instruction, tutoring, and behavior support. Everyone has a place at Mountain View.

School Climate and Mindset Key Data

Our 2024 Climate and Mindset Survey at Mountain View Elementary shows that 98% of students care about their community, 91% feel their teachers genuinely care about their well-being, and 90% feel encouraged to do their best. These results highlight the supportive atmosphere at our school, where students feel motivated and appreciated.

In addition, our overall school climate is strong with 89% of students saying the adults at Mountain View treat them with respect, 88% feel the school is welcoming for them and their families, and over 83% feel safe and believe their teachers are fair. At Mountain View, we are committed to creating a respectful, inclusive, and safe environment for everyone.

The survey also highlights the importance of social-emotional learning in our school community. 86% of students say they’ve learned to respect others’ opinions, even if they disagree, and 82% feel they can get along well with students from diverse backgrounds. Nearly 80% of students recognize and celebrate each other’s accomplishments. This shows our focus on empathy and respect is helping students build positive relationships and important life skills.

The 2024 survey also reveals our students’ positive outlook and motivation. 91% say they work hard to achieve their goals, 90% believe they’ll graduate from high school, and nearly 90% understand their strengths and challenges while setting goals for their future. Our students are driven, confident, and focused on what’s ahead, ready to succeed!

Goals for the year

  1. By May 2025, we will ensure that 70 percent of 3rd, 4th, and 5th-grade students who are present for 90% or more of the school year will score above the 21st percentile in NWEA MAP Reading; 70% of Kindergarten, First, and Second Grade students who are present for 90% or more of the school year will perform at or above benchmark on their mCLASS Composite score by May 2025.
  2. By May 2025, we will ensure that 70 percent of all students who are present for 90% or more of the school year fall in the tier I placement (on or above grade level) on their Spring iReady diagnostic assessment.
  3. By May 2025, all instructional staff will be trained in the Zones of Regulation and will consistently implement the curriculum with their class at least once per week.
