MAP – Math

For the 2023-2024 school year when comparing Chapman students nationally, students demonstrated an incredible amount of growth. Based on this growth Chapman ranked in the 73rd percentile. 58% of students scored above the 41st percentile on Math Maps on the Spring Diagnostic.

MAP – ELA

For the 2023-2024 school year when comparing Chapman students nationally, students demonstrated growth. Based on this growth Chapman ranked in the 52nd percentile. 58% of students scored above the 41st percentile on Math Maps on the Spring Diagnostic. 66% of students scored above the 41st percentile on the Spring Diagnostic in Reading.

Elementary Specific

iReady

In Kindergarten through 5th graders, teachers utilize the I-Ready Math curriculum. These program features hands on learning opportunities and students have access to Mypath. This is a computer based program that assists teachers in identifying a specific path to learning for each student.

CKLA

In Kindergarten through 5th grade, teachers utilize the CKLA Language Arts Program. This program is aligned to the science of how students learn to read. It is a comprehensive program that focuses on foundational reading skills and establishing background knowledge.

School Projects/Initiatives

  • Chapman is working to foster a sense of community, belonging and mentorship within the student body. Each student is part of a “Chapman Nest.” On Early Release days, students in Kindergarten through 8th grade are assigned to a Nest for the duration of their time at Chapman. This group completes service projects, academic projects, and implements peer mentoring.
  • Chapman has also adopted a school-wide behavior management system. Students are recognized for positive behavior and students who demonstrate the need for more support get the help they need to be more successful.
  • Chapman has robust after school offerings. For the middle school, there are various sports offered year round. For younger students, there is weekly chess club, violin club, skills club, and cheerleading club.

Honors, Awards and Recognitions

  • Chapman is a Title I school. Mrs. Stokes was awarded principal of the year for the KPBSD for the 23-24 School year.
  • Mrs. Klaich, Chapman’s 6th-8th grade Language Arts Teacher, was awarded the VFW Teacher of the Year for the State of Alaska for the 22-23 school year.

School Culture Highlights

Chapman takes pride in establishing a positive school culture. Chapman’s student council sponsors activities that create pride in their school and encourage inclusive attitudes. The staff actively participates professional development geared towards meeting students needs through restorative practices. Many teachers integrate the culture of Alaska and Indigenous People into their units of study.

Family and Community Engagements/Highlights

One of Chapman’s school goals is to hold family engagement activities at least once per quarter. In the past, Chapman has held Science and Exploration Nights, Pinewood Derby Car Creation Nights, Art Nights, and other showcases of student learning. Chapman’s unique band and music program puts on semester concerts that attracts families and the community.

Afterschool Programs

Chapman offers diverse after school experiences for students. The following after school opportunities are available to students: basketball, soccer, volleyball, track and field, Nordic Skiing, chess, cheerleading, battle of the books, tutoring, and violin. Our 8th grade also go on an educational field trip to Yellowstone for a week of immersive learning sponsored by the National Park Service.

Goals for the year

Academic

  1. By spring benchmark, the K-2 will have 50% or less below benchmark, by ensuring students are getting their allotted intervention times. Currently, 73.3% of our students are below or well below on reading indicators.
  2. For 3rd-5th grade, Increase median percentile score by 8% by the Spring MAPS benchmark. After the Fall MAPS test, 3rd-5th class median percentile score for reading was 51%. Our goal is to see this increase to 59% percent by the Spring benchmark.
  3. 90% of 6-8 students will achieve their projected growth goal in Reading by Spring of ‘24.

Social and Emotional

  1. Students will participate in one targeted social emotional lesson per week.

Fostering a Sense of Community

  1. Students will participate in one service-learning project a semester.
  2. Staff will host one family education night per quarter.
