Youth Preparedness Council(8th-11th graders)

Do you know a young leader who is passionate about making a positive impact on their community? The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) is looking for students in grades 8 through 11 interested in supporting disaster preparedness and making a difference in their communities to join the Youth Preparedness Council (YPC). During their two-year terms on the council, members will take on projects at both a local and national level and develop their leadership and project management skills.  Currently Madeline Ortiz from Alaska is on the FEMA National Council but her term is almost over.  Wouldn’t it be great to have another Alaskan youth on this council.  Application are due by March 7th.  We have had only 3 Alaskan youth apply so far.

Why Is It Important for Youth to Apply?

The youth of today are integral to building prepared communities of the future. By applying to and joining the YPC, youth will have the opportunity to become influential change agents in their community.

How Does the YPC Work?

YPC members meet with FEMA leadership throughout their term to develop strategies, initiatives, and projects. Also, YPC members attend the annual YPC Summit, where they will meet with FEMA representatives and complete emergency preparedness projects. Please note, the 2021 YPC Summit will be conducted virtually. Learn more about the projects YPC members have worked on here.

Applicants not selected for the national Youth Preparedness Council may be invited to serve on the Region 10 Youth Preparedness Council, which serves the states of Alaska, Idaho, Oregon, and Washington.  Our Regional YPC has done some amazing work.  Last year our Alaskan YPC members created an Alaskan Youth Travel Brochure.  This year our 3 members are working on YPC social media, YPC webinars and a YPC webpage.  Plus I have had the opportunity to do a virtual presentation with an Alaska YPC member to their school which was a great success.
