Lydia Jacoby’s Visit

This week, Seward Elementary welcomed our very own Gold Medalist, Lydia Jacoby! The students had a great time. Thank you Lydia!

Two Updates!

Hello! We have 2 informational items for you:

1) We just wanted to remind you that tomorrow, Friday, March 18th, is an early release day with students being dismissed 1-1/2 hours earlier than normal. Kindergarteners released at 1:20 and 1st through 5th grades at 1:30. Bus service will be provided and your child will arrive home 1-1/2 hours earlier than they usually do.

2) Another important message comes from Tony at Apple Bus

Starting Monday, March 21st, we are going to take children that live on Nash Road and Salmon Creek/Camelot, off of bus 3 and move them to bus 1 (only in the afternoon). Morning will stay as it is). We are hoping that this will bring some of the children’s ride times down and help with the overcrowding on bus 3. I am sorry for the changes but we hope that this will be a good change. I have been in contact with some parents and the driver of bus 3 is telling kids and parents when he drops children off in the afternoons of these new changes.

My job is to make things as easy as possible on everyone while keeping drivers and students safety a number one priority. Bus 3 has been averaging over 78 kids on the bus for a while now, and some kids are on the bus for over an hour. My hope is that this change will bring down ride times and also make route 3 more manageable for the driver and the students. Thank you for being so patient and flexible with us while we go through this rough time of staffing but I promise that we are doing the best we can with what we have.  Please feel free to reach out to me (Tony) with any questions or concerns you might have at (907) 224-3559. Thank you.

Covid Tests Available

Good Evening Seward Elementary Parent(s)/Guardians(s), As we approach spring break please be advised that at home self administer Covid tests are still available. The tests are available on a first come first serve basis. I strongly advise calling before coming to the school to pick boxes up. This helps our school community keep track of our numbers and assist in mitigation plans. Call the school’s office to make arrangements should you want a box for your student/child. Rapid PCR appointments are also still available BY APPOINTMENT ONLY with the school nurse. The last day to pick up the at home self-administer antigen Covid tests is 3/4/2022. Thank you.

2 Hr Delay 2.22.2022

►ALERT: TWO-HOUR Delay Start

Nikiski Middle-High School, Nikiski Northstar Elementary, Moose Pass and Seward schools will open with a TWO-HOUR DELAY START* on Tuesday, February 22, 2022, in response to weather and road conditions.

If weather and road conditions warrant a full closure for any schools, that announcement will be made about 7:00 AM. If you don’t hear anything, the two-hour delay start remains in effect. All Pre-K sessions—both morning and afternoon—at these schools are cancelled during a two-hour delay start.

A two-hour delay means that morning buses run two hours later than normal, school begins two hours later than normal, and Pre-K sessions are cancelled. The school day ends at the normal time. All other KPBSD schools will open on a normal schedule.

*TWO-HOUR Delay Start for these KPBSD schools· Moose Pass School· Nikiski Middle-High School· Nikiski North Star Elementary School· Seward Elementary School· Seward High School· Seward Middle School

Be safe. Parents and guardians, if school is open and you decide to keep your child at home based on weather and road conditions near you, absences or late arrivals will be excused.

Updates Starting 2/11/22

Two things to update families of our Seward Elementary students:

1) Just a reminder that tomorrow, Friday, February 11th is an early release day with students getting out of school 1-1/2 hours earlier than their regularly scheduled day. (Kindergarteners released at 1:20, all other students at 1:30) Buses will drop your students off 1-1/2 hours earlier than their regular drop-off time.

 2)  Please read the letter below regarding the lifting of universal masking at Seward Elementary beginning tomorrow, Friday February 11, 2022.

Dear Seward Elementary families and staff,

Thank you for your effort in the past four weeks to keep as many people attending school in person. Our school will no longer require universal masking beginning February 11th, 2022; however, we strongly encourage face coverings indoors at school. Factors that impacted this decision may include reduction of positive COVID-19 cases in schools, less identified close contacts who need to quarantine, a lower student absenteeism rate; available staffing and substitute teachers, local hospital and ICU capacity, community transmission rates, and ability to physically distance in our school.

To see daily Seward Elementary data and operation status, the https://covid19.kpbsd.org/dashboard includes daily school specifics. The COVID-19 Hub covid19.kpbsd.org has resources and the KPBSD mitigation plan. If something changes and deserves direct communication from me, you will definitely hear at that time. You can help protect your family and community: if you or someone you know has any symptoms of illness, stay home, and get a free COVID-19 test.

Sincerely,

 Alan Haskins

Principal, Seward Elementary
