Message from Our Superintendent

Dear KPBSD Students, Families, Staff, and Community Members,

It is an incredible honor to serve as Superintendent of the Kenai Peninsula Borough School District. I have spent much of my life on the Kenai Peninsula, my own children completed their K–12 education in KPBSD schools, and I care deeply about our students, our schools, and the communities we serve.

KPBSD is a one of a kind school district in America. We serve students in 39 schools across communities spread throughout an area roughly the size of West Virginia. Our schools range from larger comprehensive high schools to small schools in communities accessible only by boat or plane. Each of our schools and communities has different strengths and needs, but we are united by one mission: Supporting Students in Life Success.

Our focus is clear. Student outcomes must be at the center of our work. We want more students reading and doing math at grade level. We want students to attend school consistently and be engaged in their learning. We want every student to graduate prepared for what comes next, whether that is college, a career, the military, vocational training, or another path they choose.

We have much to be proud of. Our graduation rate continues to rise. The graduation rate for our Alaska Native students exceeds the statewide rate by 15 percentage points. Our students meet or exceed most state and national growth measures, and KPBSD students continue to excel in academics, career and technical education, college credit opportunities, athletics, activities, the arts, and service to their communities.

We are also honest about where we need to improve. We will continue strengthening instruction, continuing to use data to better understand and respond to student needs, and making sure our time, resources, and decisions are focused on improving outcomes for students. Being proud of KPBSD and expecting ourselves to continually improve go hand in hand.

Our mission, vision, strategic plan, and core values of Community, Integrity, Perseverance, and Academic Excellence guide our work. Just as importantly, we believe every student deserves to learn in a school where they are known, valued, and supported.

I strongly believe in KPBSD and in the potential of our students. Our district is strong because of the people who serve our students each day and because of the families and communities that support our schools. Together, we will continue working to make KPBSD an exceptional place for every student to learn, grow, and prepare for life success.

Thank you for your trust, your support, and your commitment to our students.

Sincerely,

Clayton Holland
Superintendent

About Our Superintendent

Since 2021, Mr. Holland has served as Superintendent of the Kenai Peninsula Borough School District, leading 42 schools that serve more than 8,000 students across the Kenai Peninsula. He is committed to ensuring every student has the skills, knowledge, and confidence to thrive in life beyond school.

Mr. Holland has called the Kenai Peninsula home since 2000, raising his children here and serving the community in various roles for more than two decades. He began his career in education in 1995 as an elementary teacher before moving into middle and high school special education. Over the years, he coached football, track and field, and the Native Youth Olympics, and served as a student government advisor. In 2008, he became Director of Student Support Services, followed by Assistant Superintendent of Instruction in 2020, before being appointed superintendent. Under his leadership, the district has expanded academic and career and college readiness opportunities, strengthened early literacy, and achieved notable gains in student success.

He believes the Kenai Peninsula is the best place to live and work in Alaska, and that the Kenai Peninsula Borough School District provides an exceptional education for every student. In his free time, he enjoys outdoor activities such as hiking, camping, and fishing, as well as reading, instructing Judo, and volunteering in the community.
