New Teaching Talent - Bethany Nyboer

Bethany NyboerAlthough Bethany Nyboer's three siblings are teachers, she wasn't sure teaching was her true calling. She attended Hope College in Holland, Michigan and obtained her bachelor of arts in communication. Upon graduation, Bethany worked in the public relations department at WOOD TV 8 in Grand Rapids, Michigan and then at the Outpost of Holland, an outdoors store, in Holland Michigan.

Bethany, and her husband Granger, moved to Alaska three years ago when Granger accepted a job as a teacher in Tyonek. She began working as an aide in the school. The experience confirmed for her that she was truly in her element, working one-on-one with children in the classroom. Bethany decided to go back to school. She took classes online from Grand Canyon University in Phoenix, Arizona, and received her masters degree in special education.

In addition to Tyonek, Bethany has worked as an aide at Soldotna Elementary, and as a student teacher at both Soldotna Elementary and Redoubt Elementary. Bethany is a special education K-6 teacher at Sterling Elementary. "I have a really good team that has helped to make my first year great. There is great collaboration and support throughout the building at Sterling," said Bethany.

Bethany enjoys the many different outdoor activities offered in Alaska. She and her husband enjoy fishing, camping, climbing, and skiing, and are celebrating the purchase of their first home.
