KPBSD Students Showcase Talent

Friends, family and community fans recently attended the 21st annual "Visual Feast" at the Kenai Community Center. The show featured artwork from dozens of young talented KPBSD students representing six area high schools: Homer High School, Kenai Alternative High School, Kenai Central High School, Nikiski School, Skyview High School and Soldotna High School. "In the past we have had even more schools, including middle schools participate. Our hope is that next year's event will showcase talent from an even larger group of schools", explains Stephanie Cox, Art Instructor at Soldotna High School.

Art instructors at each school work cooperatively to organize the opening ceremony, exhibition and competition. Each instructor selects 18 to 20 pieces of student artwork that represents a broad array of projects taught throughout the current school year. The group of instructors divided the artwork into eight categories.

Three community representatives-Bill Heath, Chris Jenness and Rebecca Hinsberger- chose one winner in each category and an overall "best in show". "The impact of the show is wonderful! It is an opportunity for the students to see their (and other's) work in a professional atmosphere. They get ideas from each other - as do the art teachers! It is also great for the community to see how talented our students are. It especially spotlights students that might not be recognized in any other areas in school or the students that didn't feel they were "artistic" at all", said Cox.
