Did you have the opportunity to join a “Career and Technical” student organization (CTSO) when you were in high school? Students from Homer High School, Kenai Central High School, Soldotna High School and Skyview High School said yes to join a CTSO last fall, and on Thursday, January 16, 2012, seventy students from these schools gathered for a day-long district Career and Technical Conference held at Skyview High School and Soldotna High School.

The morning began at Skyview with breakfast and a keynote address. Students then went to morning workshops—and competitions—held at Kenai Peninsula College, SoHi, and Skyview. Workshops included topics such as Culinary Arts, Construction, Welding, Drafting, Floricultural, Job Interview, Employability Skills, Technical Math, and Keyboarding. Everyone converged at SoHi for lunch, followed by afternoon workshops and an award assembly. Several workshops were repeated, along with new offerings such as Extemporaneous Speech, Prepared Speech, Fork Lift, Skid-Steer, Trailer Back-up, Rigging and Flagging, Self-Defense, Emergency Services, and Challenger Center Robotics.

Students were engaged, learning together, and competing. Awards were given for first through third place in each category. Students will have an opportunity to compete in Anchorage at the statewide CTSO competition later this spring.
