The first Wednesday in October makes a perfect time to celebrate National Walk to School Day. Not only does the day encourage getting some exercise, but the weather is perfect for walking to school, too.
#WalkToSchoolDay
Walking is one of the best forms of exercise. It isn’t hard on our joints and feet like running and jogging but still gives us all the advantages. The goal of this day is to raise awareness and support for the health, community and environmental benefits of regularly walking or biking to school.
Safety Tips for Walking to School
Though walking to school has many benefits, it can also be a dangerous activity.
- Always plan your route and share it with your family.
- Never walk alone. Use a buddy system with another student from your school.
- Pay attention to your surroundings.
- Never talk to strangers.
- Know your neighborhood and avoid areas that are out of view from main areas.
- Familiarize yourself with traffic rules.
- Wear proper reflective clothing and good walking shoes.
